Hello all. Received my B.A. (History, 1965) and M.A. (Education, 1966), both from Stanford, and a PhD in Anthropology/archaeology from UCLA (1985). Spent 8 years in the Peace Corps as a teacher and administrator in Togo, West Africa. My wife is from Togo; we were married there in 1973. Upon my return, taught at a private school (K-8) for three years before going to UCLA; was Director of Archaeology for an environmental firm for 9 years, before teaching Anthropology at Palomar Community College (San Diego County) and running their A.A. Degree Program in Archaeology for 23+ years. My wife has a degree in Special Education and is still teaching for another year or so. I retired in December 2017 but have continued my research on ancient ironworking in Togo as recently as this past January to April 2022. Discovered the remains of a smelting furnace dating to 400-200 BC - my Indiana Jones moment, I guess. Heading for Togo in April for three months for my last archaeology expedition. I often take 2-3 community college students with me to Togo, including two in 2022 and three in 2024. Our children are doing well. Jason is an attorney for Instagram. Jillian, after a career in the Army, now has a job in Intelligence which she has always wanted to do. Our granddaughter, Payton, will be 18 in May and hopes to attend veterinary school next Fall. Hope all of you are well and safe, and hopefully will see you at the reunion. Planning on a trip to Egypt in December. Phil

School Story

Attended Beverly Vista Elementary in Beverly Hills, then Belle Haven in East Menlo Park before coming to Palo Alto for 6th grade at Hoover Elementary. Went to Wilbur and then to Cubberley. I was generally academically focused but did letter in tennis. Participated in a lot of activities with the YMCA as member then president of Les Freres club, and later was president of the inter-club council. Attended working field trips to Hoopa Indian Reservation for 3 summers and one summer at Round Valley Indian Reservation. Later at Tule IR during my freshmen year at Stanford. Was also reporter and senator for the Youth in Government Program. Was also Boy Scout, then Explorer Scout, and loved hiking at Yosemite. Participated in Cubberley talent show singing "Come on the Sloop John B" with Scott Wallace and Alan Charkow (name not on school list).

I guess one of the favorite stories was when I ran through a plate glass window at Mr. Steinke's (Wilbur) during a party at his house. Larkin Smith wrote it up in the school newspaper, entitled, "People who Live in Glass Houses, Whooah!." Loved to play flag football but especially ping pong. My three years with the Les Freres Club was a lot of fun with many good memories of my fellow club members - Mike Hofmayer, Rick Bakalinsky, Gil Moore, Craig Cordes, Lee Smith, Pete Bradley, Pete Brennan, Roger McPherson, Paul Hedberg, David Kucera, Jim Kunselman and others.

Hi Penny, do we have enough people committed to going to the reunion to make it work? I know that September 6th is the last day I can cancel my reservations to get a refund. Keeping my fingers crossed. Perhaps I missed an announcement here. Thanks, Phil

I do not know Bruce well but he was always so receptive and friendly when I did speak with him. I remember how warm is reception was for the 45th (I believe) in reunion. After reading some of the comments, I can see even more why he was so widely likely and appreciated.  My deepest condolences to his family and his friends.  Just a couple of weeks ago I was thinking how nice it will be to see Bruce and Bud Mitchell at the reunion.   Bruce, Rest in Peace.   Philip de Barros
