Karl Schonborn just published "Privilaged Killers". (I met Karl when we were both at Jordan Jr. H.S.; Karl went on to Paly, continuing to attend a church right around the corner from Cubberley and creating new friends to augment his Van Auken school pals).
Privilaged Killers is a classic true crime work that focuses on Karl's experiences as a criminologist with several sociopathic individuals. Shockingly, these-and especially a few killers-seemingly appeared from nowhere in Schonborn's everyday life, and each helped erode his long-standing criminal-justice idealism. Because each of the killers were privileged - blessed with brilliance, wealth, talent, or charm - Lady Justice only slapped their wrists despite their homicidal attacks.
Karl's first commercial book, "Cleft Heart", is the story of his journey from birth through childhood and beyond as a cleft-affected person.
As a personal aside: Karl was the first person I ever knew with a cleft lip and palate. I became a dental assistant and learned much more about the struggles children have when born with this deformity. Some struggle just to live. My mother-in-law worked in the new baby nursery at Stanford Hospital for 13 years. She would tell me about the babies born with clefts, requiring her to feed them with an eyedropper. In "Cleft Heart", Karl writes about his mother's determination that her son would survive. Her drive to find the right doctors, the best surgeons, the appropriate speech therapists and dentists...anyone who could help her son not only survive, but flourish. This book is a testament to a mother's love for her child, a mother's perseverance to give her son life, a second time. This was my take away from reading this very powerful an beautifully written book (Penny Willig).
